Cooling
Air conditioning installation
Most houses here were built to hold heat in, not let it out. A properly sized, properly sited system makes a bedroom sleepable in August and takes the chill off in October. We size it for your room, not for a brochure.
Straight answers
The things people ask first
- Does air conditioning heat as well as cool?
- Yes. A modern split system is an air-to-air heat pump. The same unit that cools the room in July warms it in February, and it is efficient at it.
- What will it cost to run?
- It runs on electricity, which costs roughly three and a half times what gas does per unit. This is the right answer for a room you cannot otherwise use, or a home on storage heaters. It is not a way to bring a gas bill down.
- Which systems do you fit?
- Mostly Daikin (Sensira, Comfora and Stylish), plus Panasonic, Alpha and Ariston at some sizes. The Daikin and Panasonic units go down to around 19 decibels on their quietest setting, which is what matters in a bedroom.
- Is there a grant?
- Air-to-air heat pumps are written into the Boiler Upgrade Scheme at £2,500, but the MCS route to claim it is not live yet, and it only applies to a system sized to heat the whole property. We will not quote you a grant we cannot claim.
- Do I need a survey?
- Yes, and it is a short one. Photos of the rooms and the outside wall get us most of the way to a price. The visit confirms the two things that actually decide the job: where the units can go, and whether your electrics can carry it.
In the price
Everything that is included
- Indoor and outdoor units
- Standard pipework run and condensate drain
- Wall or bracket mounting, sited for noise
- Electrical connection to a suitable existing supply
- Commissioning and handover
- F-Gas compliant installation and documentation
Not in the price
And everything that is not
- A new consumer unit or an electrical supply upgrade
- Scaffolding where access needs it
- Structural alterations
- Pipe runs longer than the quoted length, or concealed runs
- Making good plaster, tiling or decoration
If your job needs any of these, we tell you before you commit, not on the day, and not after a deposit.

What we fit
The kit that goes on the van
We are not tied to one manufacturer, so the honest answer to which one you should have is: whichever one suits your house. Here is what we fit most, what each is genuinely good at, and the thing about each one that the brochure puts on the last page.
Daikin
Perfera and Stylish
Quiet enough to sleep through. Warm enough to use in February.
- Down to 19 decibels on its lowest setting, which is quieter than most fridges. This is the one that goes in a bedroom or a nursery.
- It heats as well as it cools, and keeps heating down to minus twenty-one. A conservatory or a loft office stops being a room you avoid for four months of the year.
- Daikin's Flash Streamer is designed, in their words, to help reduce certain airborne allergens and odours. We will not oversell it beyond what they claim for it.
Worth knowingAir conditioning runs on electricity, and a unit of electricity costs roughly three and a half times a unit of gas. It is the right answer for a room you cannot use, or a house on storage heaters. It is not a way to bring a gas bill down, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not done the sums.
Panasonic
Etherea
The one to look at if somebody in the house has hay fever.
- Nineteen decibels on its quietest setting, and rated SCOP 4.80 for heating, so it earns its keep in winter as well as in July.
- Panasonic's nanoe X runs whether the unit is heating, cooling or just circulating. Their own chamber testing claims it reduces certain adhered allergens and moulds. It is Panasonic's testing, in a sealed room smaller than most bedrooms, so treat it as a reason to prefer this unit rather than a health claim.
- Slimmer than most wall units, which matters more than people expect when it is going above a door or under a low lintel.
Worth knowingA wall unit recirculates the air already in the room. It does not bring fresh air in, and it will not fix a damp or ventilation problem. If that is what is actually wrong, we will say so.
Why now
Don’t wait for the next heat wave
Every summer it is the same. The week it hits thirty degrees the phones do not stop, lead times go from days to weeks, and half of Yorkshire spends the hot spell sat in front of a fan waiting for a fitter.
Air conditioning is a winter job. It is also a heating job, because the same unit warms the room in February, so a system fitted in spring has already earned its keep by the time you first use it for cooling.
You don’t have to phone. Send the form and we come back to you.
Questions
The things people actually ask
Is it noisy?
Modern split systems are quiet indoors, quieter than a fridge. Where the outdoor unit goes matters far more than the spec sheet, and getting that right is part of the job rather than an afterthought.
Will it heat as well as cool?
Most systems we fit run in reverse and will warm a room efficiently, which is useful in spring and autumn when the central heating feels like overkill. We will tell you what yours does.
Do I need planning permission?
For most domestic installations in England, no. It falls under permitted development, subject to conditions on siting, size and noise. Conservation areas and listed buildings are the exception. If yours is one, we'll flag it before you commit.
What does it cost to run?
Far less than people expect. A modern inverter split system in a bedroom draws roughly the same as a couple of old-fashioned light bulbs once it has pulled the room down to temperature. We will give you the figures for the unit we are quoting.
Who is allowed to install it?
Anyone working on equipment containing F-gas must hold their own F-Gas qualification. It is the law, not a badge. Ours do, and we'll tell you which engineer is coming.
Can you do more than one room?
Yes. A multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, which is usually tidier and cheaper than separate systems if you want two or three rooms done.
Advice
Worth reading first
What air conditioning costs to run
Nearly everyone we speak to overestimates this, usually by three or four times. The picture in people's heads is an American window unit roaring away all summer. A modern split system in a Yorkshire bedroom is a very different animal.
Read itDoes air conditioning heat a room?
Yes. And for a lot of UK households that turns out to be the more useful half of the year. A reverse-cycle split system is, technically, an air-to-air heat pump.
Read itDo you need planning permission?
For most houses in England, no. Putting an outdoor unit up generally falls under permitted development. That permission comes with conditions though, and there are properties where it doesn't apply at all.
