What it's worth
The grant amounts as they currently stand.
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump or a ground source heat pump
- £9,000 for eligible properties off the mains gas grid that heat with oil or LPG. This higher rate took effect on 21 July 2026
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler, in eligible circumstances
- £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. This is in the regulations now, but the MCS certification route is not live yet, so it cannot be claimed today
Those are the published figures at the time of writing. Grant schemes change. We'll confirm what applies to you before you commit to anything.
The conditions people trip over
- 01The work has to be done by an MCS certified installer. That isn't a nice-to-have. Without it the grant doesn't apply, however good the installation is.
- 02You don't apply and wait for a cheque. Your installer applies on your behalf and the grant comes off your quoted price, so what you see is what you pay.
- 03The property has to meet the scheme's eligibility conditions, which is why an assessment comes before a price.
- 04The heat pump has to be designed for the property properly. That means a heat loss calculation, and sometimes it means changing some radiators.
Whether it's worth it for you
The grant is big enough to change the arithmetic considerably. It isn't big enough to make a heat pump right for every house.
Where it works well is properties whose heat loss is already reasonable and whose radiators can be made to work at a lower flow temperature. Where it works badly is when someone specifies it as a like-for-like boiler swap, which it isn't.
We'd sooner tell you your house is a poor candidate than take the job and leave you cold.
